When the printer Hill Shorter required a fast and flexible solution to a pressing production deadline they turned to MetalPaper for the answers.

Their need was for a very reflective silver mirror board for use as the 6pp cover for the souvenir brochure of the Doctor Who Live show, the opening night of which was only 2 weeks away at the O2 arena. The cover required a fully gloss coated reverse to match the text paper and maintain print quality.

The solution was simple. Hill Shorter chose a 350gsm, 2 side coated gloss art board from merchant stock in 720x1020mm size. They printed the inside cover, 2 up, 4 colour conventional offset litho + sealer and sent the sheets to Metalpaper for silver mirror lamination of the outer cover side. This was completed and the sheets were then sent to Windles for 4 colour UV litho printing of the silver mirrored outer cover . After protective gloss OPP lamination at FRIP Hinckley the covers were returned to Hill Shorter for creasing and binding of the 32pp brochure. All was completed within 5 days.

Printing the inside cover first and then silver mirror laminating the outside cover eliminated the risk of scratching the mirror surface during this printing pass.

This flexible production sequence further benefited the end customer (BBC ) in that they did not have commit to production of their whole estimated sales quantity up front – they could split the production run and only commit to a final quantity once sales from the first few days had been analysed.

The speciality metpol board laminators MetalPaper have released a new swatch to showcase their Hi Gloss Mirror Range and innovative Satin range. The A5 swatch launches the new colours in both finishes.

The boards are available in 270gsm and 370gsm in the High Gloss range and 290gsm and 390gsm in the Satin range.

A total of 8 colours are currently available in each range.

Hazel Eastlake, Sales and Marketing Executive for the company commented “We were aware of a growing demand for gentler mid tone shades. We decided to launch mid tones in Red, Green, Pink and Blue. We opted for a traditional deeper colour with Gunmetal and Copper alongside the classic Silver and Gold.” She added “When developing the scuff resistant Satin range we took into account the fact that often the finished product is subjected to a lot of handling such as brochures, media packaging or point of sale displays. Choosing a scuff resistant laminate extends the product life and therefore offers greater value.”

For the cover of the swatch MetalPaper used a Matt silver finished laminate from their stock ranges. The cover was accentuated by gloss gunmetal foil blocking by FRIP finishing.

Ian Browning Managing Director from Creative explains “The customer wanted the CD booklet to feel and look the same throughout with the cover and the text pages printed on the same stock, however, they also wanted a bright silver finish on the cover and back page. I contacted Steve Livesey at MetalPaper as they had previously laminated some metpol to my own sheets of board and I felt they may be able to help”.

The solution was for Creative to supply stock sheets of 250gsm Lumi Silk to MetalPaper and for them to apply a bright Silver metpol to one side on their Steinemann Lotus laminating machine. 170gsm Lumi Silk was selected for the text pages. The complete booklet was then printed offset litho on Creative’s Heidelberg SM74 press, using conventional litho inks (non U.V).

Steve Livesey of MetalPaper commented “It is because of our manufacturing set up that we are able to receive customers own sheets and laminate them with their choice of metpol finish. When we started to manufacture in this way last year we knew we had a solution to the old text / cover problem where it is important that the printed result on the inside front and back covers of a booklet or brochure matches the print on the text. Our customers now have the opportunity to select matching cover and text papers while also having a metpol finish on the cover even on small jobs. The cover sheets were supplied next day from merchant stock, and this combined with our production methods meant the whole job was turned around and back with Creative in 2 days.
